Language:
Latin
Date range:
Second half 14th-first half 15th c. (c. 1400?)
Author(s):
Jerome (c. 347-420)
Description:
VLF 45 is parchment codex dating to c. 1400, its leaves measuring c. 135 x 230 mm. It is constructed of 10 quires of irregular composition and some added folia, totalling 63 leaves (126 pages). Judging by the remaining quire signatures and catchwords, many leaves are lost. Almost all remaining leaves are more or less damaged or stained. Written space varies; at least four scribes worked on the text in different hands (Littera cursiva libraria, littera textualis gothica italica, littera gothica cursiva libraria, littera fere libraria). Two 15th-/16th-c. hands added titles and numbers to the epistolae and made corrections in the text. Apart from rubricated initials in the first 10 folia, initials remained mostly unfinished. The codex has a 19th-c. cardboard binding with dark leather protection; on it is the stamp of the Leiden University.
